RESERVE ENERGY
George Harrison Phelps
Neurologists tell us we use a very small part of our mental power. Possibly thirty or forty percent. The same thing is true of our bodies say the doctors, and of our wills say the psychologists, and of our imaginations adds the poet. And certainly of our opportunities thunders the successful man of affairs. Oddly enough they all speak true.
We are everywhere confronted with that mysterious power known as reserve energy.
Every runner knows what it is to get his second wind.
It was reserve energy that dragged the prospector from Death Valley after thirty days without food.
It is reserve energy that makes each one of us a potential success.
Our greatness lies within ourselves.
Fate plays no part in this present-day creed of the business man.
We are artisans of our own destiny. And we become more fearlessly active as we realize our strength. Less willing to recognize the impossible. More scornful of obstacles that stand between ourselves and the Golden Fleece.
Nor is it necessary to ransack Wall Street or Oklahoma or the far seas to illustrate this good American quality.
The winter of 1918 was the most severe that Michigan had experienced in over forty years. Railroads were paralyzed and almost every available freight car was being used by the Government to transport our troops. Dealers had to have motor cars if they were to stay in business. There was only one way. The cars must be driven over the road. From all corners of the country these dealers came and braved the ice and snow. Sometimes they were stalled in drifts for days and yet on they came—more drivers—more cars—a steady stream for weeks.
Morning after morning, a little ticker up in the telegraph office clicked off its dots and dashes. And then the boy came down and laid a bundle of yellow romances on my desk. They were messages from dealers who were journeying home with cars. And each one told its own particular tale of perseverance and adventure; of ingenuity and courage and triumph.
For the Road has always demanded these qualities of its wayfarers.
Swarthy Bedouins made dangerous the ancient trails of the desert. Cossack renegades haunted the frozen steppes, adding terror to the hardships of ice and snow. Brigands, carabinetti, highwaymen, bandits and apaches used to join the rocks and floods and snow to persecute him who would brave the terrors of the trail. That stirring old ballad, “Boot, saddle, to horse, and away!” was always half cavalier-song and half battle-cry.
Today the ways are less hazardous. The lance and the bludgeon have gone with the years. But often the road still passed over stony hills. The snows still blew and drifted. And so those little messages told of adventures triumphant. Of problems met and solved.
We were proud of those boys who drove our cars away. They caught the spirit of the times. They transported the product of one of the world’s largest motor car factories under conditions that seemed impossible. A wonderful thing this reserve energy. It pays to cultivate it.
